Poesy rings are becoming increasingly popular today, but they have a long and rich history.
The word 'poesy' ('posy' or 'poesie') is an archaic word for poetry, and the term refers to the verse or rhyming motto which is found engraved on a silver or gold band ring. The rings were very common in England from the 16th century onwards, but examples have been discovered which date from the 14th century. The poesy ring then remained a popular choice in band rings until late in the 18th century.

Often worn as a wedding or betrothal ring, the poesy rings may also have been given as gifts of friendship, love, or to mark important occasions. The verses were usually taken from poems or well-known mottoes of the time, but some verses may have been personal messages invented by the buyer. Many of the poesy rings are thought to be engraved with stock phrases by the jeweller, and books may have existed which provided verses.

The language and the style of the engraving can often help to date the poesy ring. Early examples were usually written in Latin. Many were also written in French, the language of courtly love. Both languages would have been known and understood by the upper classes in Medieval Europe. From the 15th century, this changed in England, and the verses were often written in English.

The verses can be found engraved on both the inside and outside of the band rings. Early medieval rings can be found with the inscription around the outside of the band. Later examples tend to have the verse engraved on the inside of the ring, where only the wearer can see it. The text was usually enamelled in black so that the verse was easier to read, although few rings have survived with this enamelling intact.

Many examples of gold poesy rings can be found in both the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Today, silver and gold poesy rings are making a comeback. Wedding rings are often found with personal messages engraved on the inside of the band, but now we are also seeing rings with messages and mottoes inscribed on the outside. These range from single words such as 'Peace' or 'Love', to longer lines such as 'Mon Coeur Est a Vous', a message of love which translates as, 'My Heart Is Yours'. These poesy rings make a thoughtful and romantic silver jewellery gift for a loved one, and will be cherished forever!

With the price of silver increasing all the time, your silver jewellery is becoming an investment. A few simple tips and hints will keep your silver jewellery in great condition, and ensure that it will retain it's value.

You want to enjoy wearing your jewellery, and whilst it is generally resilient to everyday activities, it will not withstand misuse. Remember to remove your jewellery when bathing, showering, swimming, playing sport or when carrying out manual or domestic work.

It is a good idea to keep your silver jewellery in the presentation box in which you bought it.

Try to keep pieces apart so they don't rub together or tangle up.

Silver needs to be cleaned on a regular basis as it can tarnish in time, or when exposed to the atmosphere. Tarnishing is not permanent. The best way to avoid tarnishing is to wear your jewellery! Handling the jewellery slows down the oxidisation process, keeping your jewellery sparkling for longer.

To maintain the original condition of your jewellery, polish with a high quality silver cloth. Every time you wear it, give your silver jewellery a buff and watch it shine!

We do not recommend the use of silver dip on delicate silver jewellery.

Do not immerse gemstones in water, as some stones can be quite porous. And never allow mother of pearl or shell to become wet. They are held in place with adhesive, and the water will cause the glue to disintegrate.

Do not let silver come into contact with fruit juices, olives, eggs, perfumes, hairspray, fizzy drinks or vinegar, as they will all tarnish silver. Similarly, do not store your silver jewellery with coins or rubber bands, as these can cause tarnishing.

If you follow these simple tips and hints, your silver jewellery will stay looking like new for years to come!

This month we have a couple of articles about wearing rings.

Jewellery itself can be traced back to Africa where there were beads made out of snail shells which date back over 75,000 years ago. The Cro-Magnons who were anatomically advanced humans in Europe were wearing bracelets and necklaces made out of bones, teeth, stones which were then strung upon an animal sinew of a piece of string. Some of these even had mother-of-pearl pieces. The Southern Russians however liked carved bracelets made out of mammoth tusks. It was not until about 7,000 years ago that copper jewellery was around.

In Asia the earliest culture to start making jewellery was the Chinese about 5,000 years ago. This jewellery was motivated by religion and had many Buddhist symbols contained within the designs. They used mainly silver for their jewellery craft which was often matched with blue their favourite colour. But historically the Chinese prefer jade over the other stones as they feel it has human qualities such as beauty, durability and hardness. Initially these jade silver jewellery designs were quite simplistic but as they evolved the rings between the 4th and 7th centures BCE shows signs of having been worked on with compound milling machine. This was hundreds of years before there was any sign of this type of machinery in the western world.

The Chinese also placed silver jewellery on their graves which is supported by the finds of aarchaeologists; most Chinese graves contain decorative jewellery.
